Take care of your mind & body; it's your only home!

Updated: Jul 7, 2019

I never understood the word spirituality; mostly because I assumed you had to practice a religion to feel it. I wasn’t raised with any particular religion, and although I pursued various ones, none resonated. As time went on, I came to the conclusion that everyone is seeking a spiritual connection in some form, because that is where we are content, happy, and it’s easy.

Those that play a sport, hunt or fish, sing, paint, create, or travel, etc., are finding their way to peace and happiness. They are authentically and intentionally making those choices to feel fulfilled. They are taking care of their MIND, and BODY.

Individuals who are authentically fulfilling themselves are training their mind to be stronger than their emotions. They are authentic. The vegetarian that gets teased from friends and co-workers is intentionally making a choice, even if it’s not popular. They simply want to eat healthier, or do so for ethical reasons.  The teenage boy that wants to be a makeup artist is intentionally doing so because it's bringing fulfillment, despite other people's opinions.  Sometimes happiness is what you feel . . . but sometimes, it’s a decision. When it’s a DECISION, it’s intentional & requires some level of effort.

A few years ago, I had the idea that I would eat a little bit better & be a little better than the day before. I thought over the span of a few months or years, I would eventually see the results of these small, daily changes.

So I started. Baby steps. Every day. It took practically ZERO effort. One walk around the block. A little yoga. A little more water. A few more vegetables. Being silent when I wanted to judge. Eliminating clutter. And before I knew it, I was much more relaxed. A weight that I didn’t even know existed, was lifted. I felt light. It was an intentional decision. That’s when I felt it; spiritual. When you connect with what really makes you feel like you.

Those daily small actions and habits built momentum quicker than I expected.…and it was exciting! Before I knew it, I had eliminated sugar and was eating mostly plant-based within 6-8 months; and that wasn’t even an initial goal or intention. I lost 8 pounds that actually stayed off. But the totally unexpected bonus was the mental clarity. Clarity that guided me to leave a mundane job that didn’t pay well or challenge me. Clarity that helped me accept the loss of my father, then a good friend 4 months later, and then my mother 5 months after that. Clarity to focus on being entrepreneurial. Just being me, with all the external BS slowly stripped away.

When you intentionally take care of your mind and body, you are taking care of YOU and your soul. Whatever your goals are, just start. Now. Baby steps. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine. Besides, you’ll get there faster than you think, and with some unexpected surprises along the way! Self-care is healthcare.
